A problem has just surfaced on my '00 156 (1.8). When running up a hill in 2nd or 3rd gear I get pinking at around 2500 to 2750 rpm. I can accelerate past the problem above 3000rpm.

Anyone else experienced this and had it fixed at the dealer.

I'm running on Shell Optimax fuel ( 98+ octane). I'm also trying some Silkolene Pro Boost octane booster at the moment to try and cure it.

Hi Jeff,

Normally pre-ignition is corrected by the ECU as it retards the ignition until the load has passed.

Had the plugs checked/cleaned recently, they could be dirty?

Cheers

Hello, this is my first post on to the forum, but have been reading it for a long time and have got lots of useful info from it. So keep up the good work!!!!
Anyway I have this exact same problem (as above) on my 1.6 2000 156, lots of pinking between 2500 and 3000 revs.
Anyone got any ideas what could be causing this? I have done 50k on original plugs and maf.
Any help is mucho appreciated!
Cheers

I don't know about the MAF...

Try to disconnect it and see if the car runs better, if it does, then it needs to be replaced.

BUT the plugs should be OK with 50K miles !!!

On a TS engine, plugs should last 60K miles...

That noise usually isn't pinking at all...
It is usually the bracket at the first joint in the exhaust manifold that links it to the engine block. That bracket fails and makes a sound like someone shaking a bunch of keys.
I had the same thing and the dealers couldn't find anything... sometime later I was under the car a noticed the failed bracket. Once removed the noise was gone.

I get a slight ping when changing up gears under load.... probably related to my P0170 though so when that is sorted it might cure the split-second pinking.

I had the same problem (156, 2.o TS) and got read of it when I changed the MAF. Anuway, always use good quality fuel or you will hear the pinking sound.

Very easy from under the car, more tricky from above.
p/n depends on year and version of car.

I just removed the bracket though!
