I feel like cryin. Please help me

The garage that my dad recommended has done the timing belt but the car is now like a totally different car. There are rattles coming from what sounds like the front exhaust, the rear tailpipe, the "tick-over" or idling is all over the place, it sounds awful and the car keeps wanting to stall. The performance hasnt seemed to deteriorate at all which makes me think the belt has actually been done properly. The owner of the garage has taken it back to look at and I am waiting for a phone call but he didn't appear at all bothered when I returned it and said something along the lines of "I'll take a look at it but it won't be caused by anything we've done."

Please give me some reassurance/advice or cheering up guys

yeah, sounds like you need a throttle potentiometer reset. What's happened to you sometimes happens when you have major work done on the engine. It's not entirely clear why this happens, but it's an alfa 156 specific problem.

It's a simple 10 minute procedure. Ask them to do it, and see what happens.

But if it is that it's not that alone I'm sure. Something exhaust wise sounds dead loose like they've disturbed it or something. I really hope its OK

Might just something on the engine cover. Get them to have a look.

They are as we speak. Since we're on the subject and I'm not overly impressed with the mechanic's attitude, does anyone have any recommendations for a decent garage in the north west that perhaps specialise in alfas or are at least reputable?

same thing happened to me after my rebuild..

i asked about a potentiometer reset and the guy had never heard of it..

maybe get it into the alfa dealer..and let him charge me £60 for 10 min work..

That's made me feel so much better bri thanks

Does anyone know, if the mechanic has done it half a tooth out by accident would I notice a decrease in acceleration or would it just have the symptoms I mentioned above? The fact that I haven't noticed a decrease in acceleration made me think it isn't half a tooth out and it's OK but maybe I'm wrong.

Any one got any ideas?

as long as the garage used the correct cam locking kit, i doubt the timing is out.

if they didnt, it could be a possibility..

I doubt they used the official alfa tools to be honest. They still reckon its half a tooth out but I just cant understand y the performance isnt affected

Im not really sure on how much hp loss the "half a tooth out" would give u, but Paul u should feel a bit more power, and overall better smoothness in higher revs after having the timing belt and cam timing all adjusted.

Re the idling, heres a trick my dealer told me. When the car is cold, turn the igniton on and off 4 times. That should reset the idle revs. This may be a selespeed only thing, but worth a shot.

the actual idle rpm seems fine (about 700rpm) but it makes the car judder and shake
