When sticking it into reverse no lights come on ?? Bulbs have been checked and switch in gear box shorted to check for operation, all apperently ok !! Is this a common fault and if so can anyone point me in the right direction? The car is a 51 plate 156 sports wagon 1.8 TS.

must be a fuse blown if its not the bulbs or switch.
typically for the reversing lights, the reversing switch "earths" the 12volt supply, theref ore completing the circuit. if swithc is activating as required, & the bulbs are good then its got to be ablown fuse of else a broken wire or else a loose connector, possibly in the boot area.
did you ahve any large bulky items in the boot recently.....or a mouse?

Update, loks like that the 12v is feed thro the reverse switch & is earthed in the boot.
