yes it was, i reckon the rattle is from the spring inside the variator buckling/going soft from been constantly been compressed & wearing the internals of the variator & its washers too, se the last 3 pictures.
not sure how long the new unit will last or if its an upgraded version or just the same quality as the one removed.

This is where the variator & its solenoid are located.
did a few test today.
The solenoid is activated by the ECU 'earthing' the solenoid.
One cable has a permanent 12 volts on it & the other cables goes 'low/to earth' when activated.... typically at 1800rpm & 'high' to deactivated at 4250rpm.
Strangely if you just start your car & rev it > 1800 is does not activate. I thought it was a temperature issue but even after the car had warmed up it would not activate. I had to drive the car 200m or so & then it activated ... i had a DMM from the Neg of the battery to the 'low' wire of the soelnoid. The DMM was sitting on the wiper as i drove in 1st gear
So once the 200m was clocked up I was able to stay parked & rev the engine seeing the solenoid activate as i increased the rev's past 1800rpm & deactivation at 4250rpms. from then up to 7200rpm the soelnoid remained deactivated... BIY once i lifted my foot the re-activated unitl 1800 rpms:
So conslusion:
In order for the variator solenoid to activate the car has to been seen to be travelling or have travelled for > 200 metres
* 800rpm to 1800rpm Variator Solenoid is Deactive
* 1800rpm to 4250rpm Variator Solenoid is Active
* 42500rpm to 7200rpm Variator Solenoid is Deactive
* 7200rpm to 1800 rpm Variator Solenoid is Active

BB, my garage sometimes repair the variator, they told me they use a set of washers to compensate the weak spring and change the washers for new ones. Have you tried that?
