After the saga of the broken gear lever housing - here - I finally got round to fixing the stiffness / not centering issue:
Intake off & battery out
Cable unclipped & shoved out of the way (top of first pic) - what is that BTW?
Undid this nut with 17mm socket
Removed the shaft - which looked pretty clean
Then rolled up some fine grade sandpaper & cleaned out the casting - loadsa crud came out
Re-assembled using plenty of grease on the shaft & there is now a massive improvement

I just followed this guide. Works like a charme - what a difference! It took me about 45 min...
