Hi everyone!
I have a 156 1.8TS '99
I would like to have your opinion/suggestion about the following.
- 1. Replace the stock air-filter with another in-box aftermarket product (e.g BMC, K&N),
or
- 2. Install a complete air-filter Kit.
What are the dis/ad-vantages of "1. /2.", having in mind that no other mod. will be done in the near future.

i went for the autodelta performance filter.
didn't notice any improvement in power, but it now has a bit louder growl as you put your foot down.
it's washable and reusable and i get a few more miles to the tank.
no mods needed to fit it as it uses original airbox.

Hi,
I replaced the original airintake ``box'' on my 1998 1.8 TS by a JTD/2.4 airintake pipe. It gives a faster reaction to the gas pedal at low revs (<3000 rpm) and sounds more sportive. More details on http://www.squadra-tuning.com/English/EN_156_intake_modification.htm

Hi
I did just that today. I am driving the 156 2.0TS and replaced the resonator with the pipe for the V6. It feels more responsive.... like the torque comes at a lower rpm. But I do not like the new sound. It is not as consistent, some low vibrations in the background that comes and go. Do you get the same sound?
Cheers

i've heard that aftermarket filter replacements - either cones or drop-in elements - cause the afm to die prematurely due to poor filtration and dust abrasion damage on the afm wire.
any truth to that? anyone using a bmc carbon airbox long term with no ill effects?

The main problem is due to over oiling (with the dirt retention oil) of the filter, this gets sucked onto the MAF wire and kills it instantly.
If you apply the correct amount of oil (a tiny amount) to the filter you should have no problems.
I have had a foam filter in for a year with no problems.
I cleaned and re-oiled it at the 60,000mile service last month.
I also have the V6 intake tube fitted (£8 p/n 60630490):
156 Intake Mod
Inside the airfilter box, there is also a narrow tube that runs down the centre of the filter element, I left that out too.

Sounds fine.
Did you leave the narrow tube inside the airbox in place?

I fitted the BMC Carbon Dynamic airbox. It replaces the silencer, airbox.....basically everything north of the air/mass meter. And i love it, it gives off a nice throbby note on acceleration. Every Alfa owner that's heard it, has fitted one. IMO just replacing the filter element in the standard box is the sexual equivalence of leaving ur socks on....doesnt really do nething positive or negative.

I think if you replace the filter element in the standard box, take out the narrow tube inside the filter box and remove the strange box that sits beside the airfilter box it will give the same performance.
I noticed that when I was pulling everything out from the AMM and down, that there is a rather big hole where the strange box enters the airfilter box. So it should be the same as mounting a new tube and cone filter.

Yes, I left that in place.
There is this deeper bass note with the 2.5L V6 intake pipe but the bass note is kinda "boomy" (i.e. not controlled bass nor tight... almost flabby)

Very interesting description!
Try it without the narrow tube (the one that passes down the centre of the air filter element).
